Hoi An, Vietnam: Lanterns, lanterns and more lanters

Arrived Hoi An, Vietnam on the 11th.  A very picturesque and historical city.  The old town is a UNESCO Heritage Site and is covered by a canopy of lighted lanterns of all different shapes, sizes and colors.  It’s touristy, but that doesn’t matter to me.  The city is clean and the old town is car and motorcycle free. They even pipe in classical music on the streets to keep people happy.  It’s just what I needed after being in the big and dirty city of Phnom Penh.

Already had one massage and food tour.  The food is excellent here and my favorite is the banh mi, which is a french baguette filled with aromatic vegetables, spices and chicken, pork or beef.    Already ate them four times.  We went to two different places that Anthony Bourdain frequented.  Sigh.  I sure do miss his travel and food adventures.

Because of the corona virus there are a lot less tourists (especially Chinese) which is good for me but very bad for business for all of the Asian countries.  Some bookings are down 40%.  A lot more masks are being worn in Vietnam, but supposedly there are only 15 cases of it so far in the country.

Daytime lanterns covering all streets in the old town

They carry loads of people on the motorcycles.  Usually small children up front.  Once I saw five people on one bike

Night food tour.  Fun group.  Anthony Bourdain was here twice for the best banh mi
